Hello [NAME]
We start this festive month with a product article by Thomas Weinzierl of Weinzierl Engineering GmbH. This gives a helpful background to the different types of transport media that KNX supports, and explains why it is ideal for the IoT. Thomas also introduces the latest Weinzierl products that are suitable for KNX IP and TP connections, and shows how they can help connect things to the Internet.
Our regular columnist and professional systems integrator, Simon Buddle, gives some compelling reasons why, in KNX installations, installers should use KNX-certified TP cable, as opposed to alternatives such as CAT5 or proprietary products. Simon proves his argument with science, and gives us the benefit of his practical experience too.
Our other regular columnist and KNX expert, Mark Warburton of Ivory Egg, discusses something I have been pondering myself, recently. That is, how to use lighting scenes in a space whilst also employing a movement detector. Mark looks at several approaches for installations with keypads and/or detectors, and illustrates these with example products and programming options. As usual, he includes some great tips and advice.
Last but not least, in the spirit of the season, Olaf Stutzenberger of ABB treats us to a fascinating case study of how KNX has been used to automate glass igloos in a hotel development called Santa Claus Village in the Arctic Circle. KNX is used for local control of HVAC and lighting in the igloos, and is also used centrally by reception for individual and global control of comfort and safety settings. The glass roofs of the igloos can be kept snow- and frost-free so that guests have the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights in the sky (and possibly even Father Christmas on his sleigh...)
And with that, on behalf of the team here at KNXtoday, I wish you merry holidays, and a happy new year!
